Welcome Refugees Fundraiser
Darling Harbour, June 2022
In June 2022, the Inner West for Refugees, with support from the City of Sydney and Fern Events, ran our second annual Welcome Refugees Fundraiser catered by PlateitForward in Darling Harbour. All proceeds went to the Asylum Seeker Centre in Newtown.
Thank you to all the local businesses and artists who sponsored us and donated prizes and silent auction items! Our speakers included former refugee, teacher and advocate Abang Anade Othow, CEO of the Asylum Seeker Centre Frances Rush and music by Afro-Cuban international trio Moussa Diakite, Len Samperi and Junior Jones. Our absolutely amazing MC for the night was Suzanne Waldron. It was a great turnout and we can’t wait for next year!
Thank you for telling us your story Abang
Our speaker, Abang Anade Othow, tells us her story of leaving war-torn South Sudan as a child and her experience of growing up against a backdrop of violence and separation from her family. Fortunately, she was accepted to come to Australia as a solo 18 year old. Here, she showed her strength - embarking on a long and worthwhile journey to become a teacher - after completing only 5 years of school growing up. Abang, who now teaches students from diverse backgrounds, is writing a memoir plus advocating for and working with marginalised communities.
I know that every refugee person has their own unique story, but what connects us all is the transformative power of healing that is part of the journey towards a purposeful life.
